Cancel Culture

Cancel culture is a form of social outing and ostracism of those who hold embarrassing views, have said or done questionable things, or have offended the sensibilities of others. In many ways it is the 21st century's answer to the public shaming the mob used to engage in. Hester Prynne's scarlet letter has been replaced with the ability of an online crowd to express its disgust with a person online. Rather than boycotting a person, the crowd makes a collective determination to boycott a person by collectively giving them the silent treatment.
